Nationality: Uruguay

When Diego Pinera left Uruguay at the age of 18, he went to the Universidad de arte y musica de la Havana, Cuba.
After his time in Cuba, Pinera got hired for one year in a salsa orchestra in Seattle, called Orquesta Cambalache- Back in Uruguay he formed his own trio "Diego Pinera trio" and recorded the CD "Buscando" on the Perro Andaluz label.
Later on he received a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and was teached by Danilo Peréz. There he recorded with Edu Tancredi the album "Ongoing Dream", featuring Antonio Sanchez, Jerry Bergonzi and Miguel Zenon. In Boston Pinera also recorded "Schades" from Shimon Ben Shir, produced by Oscar Stagnaro. Since 2003 he has lived in Berlin (Germany). He has been working continuously with musicians such as , Pernell Saturnino(percussionist by Paquitdo D'Rivera), Joe Gallardo, Sebastian Schunke,and many more. Pinera also directs is teaching master classes in various different German institutions. Further more he won first price in the Jazz and Blues Award 2005 with Latin Jazz band "Clave Azul".In the last year Diego Pinera tour in China, Malta, Holland and Southamerica with Sebastian Schunke(he recorded last cd with Paquito D'Rivera and Antonio Sanchez)..Now he start working with the famous german actress Katja Riemann.He just played in the Dresdner Drum Festival feautering also JoJo Mayer and Cindy Blackman, In April 2006 he had 4 weeks of master classes in Cuba with Cuban greats Jose Luis Quintana "Changuito" and Amadito Valdez. . In addition he owns an outstanding reputation as a jazz and latin player, independent if he play UpTempo swing tunes, latin, modern jazz, odd meters styles or free improvised music. Since 2009 he is official endorser for Meinl Cymbals and Canopus
